Candler - John Harrison Griffin, Jr. 79, formerly of 547 Asbury Road, died Tuesday, December 16, 2003 at Pisgah Manor Health Care Center. A lifelong resident of Buncombe County. He was a son of the late John Harrison Griffin, Sr. and Bertha Ensley Griffin and husband of Martha Mae Gurley Griffin who died in 1974. Mr. Griffin retired in 1974 from the U.S. Postal Service following 28 years of service. He was a former member of Snow Hill United Methodist Church, a Mason, member of the V.F.W. Post # 891 and was a U.S. Army veteran having served in W.W. I I. Surviving are his wife, Emogene Harding Griffin of Candler; daughters, Brenda Kaye Griffin of Asheville and Janice Griffin McCarson and husband, Ricky of Candler; son, Gary Michael Griffin of Spartanburg, S.C.; grandchildren, Michelle Catalano, Michael Griffin, Jr., Justin McCarson, Rebekah McCarson and Jordan McCarson; great grandchildren, Taylor Catalano, Alec Catalano, Anthony Catalano and Alyson Griffin; sister, Dorothy Osbourne of Yakima, Washington and several nieces and nephews. Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Friday in the chapel of Anders-Rice Funeral Home with the Rev. Jim Whitted officiating. Burial will be in Ashelawn Gardens of Memory with military graveside rites conducted by the Buncombe County Veterans Council Memorial Team. Pallbearers will be William Jones, Sheriff Bobby Medford, David Moore, J.B. Brown, Carroll Smith and Jack Penley. The family will receive friends 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
