Asheville - John Granville Draughon, Sr. 87, of 1314 Tunnel Road, Lot 63 died Friday February 8, 2002 at Mountain Area Hospice. A native of Dunn, NC he had lived in Buncombe County for over 40 years. He owned Ladies Ready to Wear shops in Raeford and Aberdeen and sold advertising for Asheville Citizen-Times for 23 years. He was a retired U.S. Army Colonel serving in W.W.II in the South Pacific and the occupation of Japan and was a recipient of a Bronze Star. He was the son of the late George Franklin and Serena Mae Baucom Draughon and was also preceded in death by his first wife, Nell Osteen Draughon, grandson, Matthew Everett Draughon and sister, Frances D. Rowland. Surviving are his wife, Doris Rzewnicki Draughon of the home; daughter, Nina K. James of Fairview; son, John G. Draughon, Jr. and wife, Betty of Hendersonville; brothers, George Draughon of Columbia, SC and Willie Draughon of Fort Lauderdale, FL; grandchildren, John G. Draughon, III, Joey James and Tina Ray James and five great grandchildren. Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday in the Chapel of Anders-Rice Funeral Home with the Rev. Randy Melton officiating. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Enka, with graveside rites conducted by the Buncombe County Veterans Volunteer Memorial Team.
