JIMMY BASCOMBE "POKEY" GUTHRIE, 72, OF 75 BALM GROVE AVE. DIED JANUARY 2, 2001 AT HIS RESIDENCE FOLLOWING A LENGTHY ILLNESS. A LIFELONG RESIDENT OF BUNCOMBE COUNTY. HE RETIRED IN 1984 FROM ASHEVILLE STEEL COMPANY AND WAS A MEMBER OF THE V.F.W. POST #891. MR. GUTHRIE SERVED IN U.S. ARMY, 11 TH AIRBORNE IN JAPAN DURING W.W. II AND WAS THE SON OF THE LATE ELMER JEROME AND FREIDA SUE MONROE GUTHRIE. SURVIVING ARE HIS WIFE OF 52 YEARS, BEATRICE FREEMAN GUTHRIE OF THE HOME; SONS, GERALD D. GUTHRIE OF THE HOME, J. B. GUTHRIE AND WIFE, LIBBIE AND RICKY E. GUTHRIE AND WIFE, JANET ALL OF WEAVERVILLE; DAUGHTER, BECKY BELL AND HUSBAND, TIM OF ARDEN; 9 GRANDCHILDREN AND 6 GREAT GRANDCHILDREN; SISTERS, MARY IRENE WILLIAMS OF SWANNANOA AND LOTTIE JUNE BREAZLE AND HELEN LORINE STEPHENSON BOTH OF ASHEVILLE AND SEVERAL NIECES AND NEPHEWS. FUNERAL SERVICE WILL BE HELD 11 A.M. FRIDAY AT FIRST BORN BAPTIST CHURCH WITH THE REV. JERRY JAMERSON OFFICIATING. BURIAL WILL BE IN ASHELAWN GARDENS OF MEMORY.
