Arden - Jessie Murphy Gibson, 90, was a resident of Ardenwoods Retirement Community since 2000. She formerly lived at 388 New Leicester Highway for 30 years. She died at Heather Glen Assisted Living on Thursday, September 13 after a brief and sudden illness. She was born in Haywood County on June 3, 1917 but was a lifelong resident of Asheville and Buncombe County. She was a member of Bethel Baptist Church for 30 years and later became a member of West Asheville Baptist Church. She worked at American Enka Corp. and retired from Sky City Discount Center in 1979 after 14 years of service. The almost 30 years between her two jobs was spent being a devoted wife and mother. She raised four children and took great pride in performing the same time honored duties day after day. She was gracious, dignified, loyal and her word could be trusted. She was the daughter of Charles Murphy and Rachel Elizabeth Scott Murphy. Jessie was the last of ten children. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 58 years, Ted Gibson. She is survived by daughter, Shirley Elizabeth Gibson McKinney of Thomasville, NC; three sons, Gary Joseph Gibson of Asheville, Maurice Theodore Gibson of Tampa, FL and Coy Edwin Gibson of Knoxville, TN; nine grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Services will be held at 11 A.M. Monday in the chapel of Anders-Rice Funeral Home, Rev. Brenda Lewis will officiate. Burial will be at Forest Lawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 A.M. Monday at the funeral home.
