Jerry "Papa" Dewitt Brooks

October 4, 1934 — January 14, 2024

Asheville – Jerry “Papa” Dewitt Brooks, 89, passed away on Sunday, January 14, 2024, at the Greens of Weaverville.


A native of Burlington, NC, he was a longtime resident of Buncombe County. He was a son of the late Dewitt Talmadge Brooks and Maude Elizabeth Batchelor Brooks and the husband of the late Sybil Kellum Brooks who passed away on November 21, 2015. He was also preceded in death by his son, Jerry Todd Brooks; granddaughter, Brittany Elam; and brother, Floyd Brooks.


Mr. Brooks was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and a longtime member of Victory Baptist Church where he served in several positions, including Deacon and a member of the Choir. He retired from the National Climatic Data Center and then worked for Square D until retirement.


Surviving are his daughter, Cindy Littrell and husband Paul; daughter-in-law, Stephanie Brooks; grandchildren: Tiffany Johnson, Shelby Brooks, and Aaron Travis; faithful companion, Marley; and many extended family members.


Funeral services will be held at 12:30 PM Monday, January 22, 2024, in the chapel of Anders-Rice Funeral Home with Rev. Larry Sprinkle officiating. Burial will follow at the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery with Military Honors provided by the U.S. Navy.


The family will receive friends one hour prior to services at the funeral home.

The Brooks family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the staff of The Greens at Weaverville for their loving care and support given to Mr. Brooks and his family.


In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Victory Baptist Church, 80 Olivette Road, Asheville, NC 28804.
