Jean Kathryn Small

Fletcher - Jean Kathryn Monfort Small, 85, passed away Sunday, January 15, 2006 at Park Ridge Hospital. Born on May 1, 1920, the only child to Chester Pete and Gladys McClean Monfort of Shelbyville, IN, Mrs. Small graduated from high School in Greensburg, IN and business school in Cincinnati, OH. She worked as a secretary and insurance underwriter for several years in Indianapolis, IN prior to marrying Lothair Raymond Small on February 24, 1945 in Norfolk, VA. The couple lived in Dayton, OH, Muncie, IN, Columbus, IN, St. Louis MO, and Cedar Rapids, IA before settling in Asheville in 1973 to operate the Karmelkorn Shoppe in the Asheville Mall. She was an active member of the First Church of Christ Scientist in Asheville and the Christian Science Mother Church in Boston, MA. Jean will always be remembered by her family and friends for having never met a stranger and her ability to make others always feel comfortable and at home. She was very devoted to her family and friends. Her husband preceded her in death on May 29, 2004. She is survived by her son, Todd Monfort Small and wife Judy of Ballwin, MO; her daughter, Stacy Ann Small of Fletcher; grandson, Christopher Scott Small and wife Amy of Ballwin, MO; granddaughter, Krista Jean Small Wimberly and husband Casey of Kansas City, MO; great-grandchildren: Alden Elizabeth Small of Ballwin and Dayne Jackson Wimberly of Kansas City; and her beloved cat, Mouschi. A family memorial service will be held in Ballwin, MO followed later by a gathering of friends in Asheville to celebrate her life. Memorials may be made to the First Church of Christ Scientist of Asheville, the Asheville Humane Society, the Animal Compassion Network of Asheville, or to a favorite charity.
