James Robert Metcalf

James Robert Metcalf, 85, went home to be with Jesus and rejoin his departed family members on Sunday, February 9, 2025, at the Laurels of Green Tree.

A native of Flag Pond (Unicoi County), TN, he spent most of his life in Buncombe County. He was a son of the late Bart Metcalf and Frances “Frankie” Hensley Metcalf and was the husband of the late Lillian Jones Metcalf. He was also preceded in death by his children: Sandra Jo Bongardt and Jimmy Metcalf; and siblings: Jeanette King, Janice Buckner, Larry Metcalf, and Reba Metcalf.

James grew up singing Gospel and Folk songs with his sisters, sharing many happy times and winning many trophies together. He owned and operated two Bingo Halls in the Asheville Area and retired from St. Joseph Hospital as a Master Craftsman Carpenter.

Surviving are his daughter, Teresa Zethof; grandchildren: Stacey Ingle, and Tiffany Metcalf; special great-grandson, Daniel Ingle; siblings: Mabel Reese, Mafre Cole, and Alberta Webb; and many nieces and nephews.

A service to celebrate his life will be held later in the spring at the Stateline (Metcalf) Family Cemetery in Flag Pond, TN.
