James Cate Fowler

Candler - James Cate Paw Fowler, 97 formerly of 50 Gudger Road died Wednesday October 30, 2002 at the WNC Baptist Retirement Home. A native of Buenos Aires, Argentine Republic, he had resided in Buncombe County since 1936. He was a graduate of Mercer University and served as an agent with the I.R.S. for several years then was part owner with the Canton Insurance Agency and Champion Ford Company in Canton. He was a charter member and former accountant and deacon of Grace Baptist Church and was also active in their Deaf Ministry. He was a member of the Asheville Track Club and established several running records for State Seniors Games. He was a son of the late Frank James and Daisy Miranda Cate Fowler and the husband of the late Bertha Jamison Fowler. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Betty Margaret Fowler and sister, Margaret Fowler Drake. Surviving are his brother, Dr. Franklin T. Fowler of Richmond, Va. and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Thursday at Grace Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Derrill Smith officiating.
