Hubert Carlyle "Dick" Dixon

Asheville Hubert Carlyle Dick Dixon, 88, of Asheville, was promoted to Heaven on Sunday, October 10, 2010. He was a resident of Madison Manor Rehabilitation Center in Mars Hill. Mr. Dixon was born on April 3, 1922 in Madison, NC. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. and Mrs. H.C. Dixon; and a sister, Caryl DuPlessis. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Betty DiSomma Dixon, of the home, whom he struck with his Army truck in Naples, Italy in 1944. He is also survived by three sons: Buzz Dixon and wife Soon-ok of Chatsworth, CA, Rikk Dixon of the home, and Robert Dixon and wife Kim of Kernersville, NC; eight grandchildren: Yang-mi, Heather (and husband Bobby), Kristy, Amber, Lyle, Laura (and husband Dustin), Luke and Lindsey; three great-grandchildren: Skyler, Harvey, and Lily; and sister, Bidney Dixon of Northridge, CA. As a member of the Greatest Generation, he served in the Army during both World War II, where he was stationed in North Africa and Italy, as well as the Korean Conflict, where he was stationed in Raleigh. He was Honorably Discharged as a Sergeant. He graduated from the University of North Carolina with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism and from North Carolina State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Textiles. For 33 years, he was an industrial engineer in garment manufacturing and retired from Vanderbilt Shirt Company in 1988. A lifelong Southern Baptist, Mr. Dixon served as a Deacon, Sunday School Superintendent and choir member. In the early 1960s, he was a member of Barnardsville Baptist Church and then Oteen Baptist Church. After moving back to Asheville in 1976, he joined Merrimon Avenue Baptist Church. Through the years he participated as a Boy Scout volunteer, was a member of the Lions Club, and the Frances Burdette American Legion Post 70. He loved baseball and was an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox. Memorial services will be held at 2 PM Tuesday at Merrimon Avenue Baptist Church, with Pastor Daniel Dockery officiating. The family will receive friends following the services. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering for International Missions, C/O Merrimon Avenue Baptist Church, 283 Merrimon Avenue, Asheville, NC 28801. Anders-Rice Funeral Home is assisting the Dixon family.
