Asheville Herman Walter DeHart, Sr., 77, of 38 Sardis Road Circle, passed away Sunday, June 15, 2008 at his residence. A native of Union, SC, he had resided in Buncombe County for the past 65 years. He retired from Skyland Distributing, and was a member of Brush Creek Baptist Church in Bryson City. Mr. DeHart was a veteran of the US Navy during the Korean War. He was a member of the Biltmore Lodge #446, Ancient Free and Accepted Masons and a member of the Scottish Rite of Free Masonry, SJ, USA. He was also a member of the Shriners of North America, belonging to the Oasis Temple in Charlotte, NC. Mr. DeHart was the son of the late Meax James and Nora Miller DeHart, and was also preceded in death by two brothers: Dillard and Dallas DeHart; and three half-brothers: Curtis, Richard and Lewis Lunsford. Surviving are his wife of 56 years: Georgia Burleson DeHart, of the home; daughter, Sharon Kanipe of Asheville; sons: H. Walter DeHart II, and wife Beth of Asheville, Michael Elton DeHart and wife Gigi of Mills River, Roger Dallas DeHart and wife Nancy of Candler, and Wayne Edwin DeHart and wife Sherrie of Fairview; sister, Ruth Helton and husband Tommy of Hendersonville; 7 grandchildren, 8 step-grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. Graveside services will be held at 10 AM Wednesday at Forest Lawn Memorial Park. Military rites will be conducted by the Buncombe County Veterans Council Memorial Team. Pallbearers will be grandsons: Bryan DeHart, Adam Kanipe, Josh DeHart, Dillon Shelton, Michael Robinson, and Evan Wise. Honorary pallbearers will be Chris Banks and Jim Taylor. The family will receive friends from 7-9 PM Tuesday at Anders-Rice Funeral Home.
