Candler - Herbert Ray Roberson, Jr., 74, died Tuesday December 24, 2002 in an Asheville Health Care Facility after a period of declining health. A Buncombe County native, he was born August 11, 1928. He was the son of the late Herbert R. Roberson, Sr. and Verchie Lance Roberson. He attended Asheville City Schools, Mars Hill College and was a 1949 graduate of Wake Forest University. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and was an employee of American Enka Corporation for 26 1/2 years. He retired in 1993 from Champion International with 18 years of service. He was a member of Montmorenci United Methodist Church where he was a member of the United Methodist Mens Club, past member of the Candler Lions Club and a regular volunteer for Habitat for Humanity since his retirement. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Julia R. Roberson of the home; son, Herbert R. Roberson III and his wife, Tammy of Candler; granddaughters, Amanda Rae Roberson and Rebecca Lynn Roberson both of Candler; step-granddaughters, Megan Ellerbee of Candler and Crystal Ellerbee of Providence, KY; great grandsons, Taylor Eugene Nicholson of Candler and Sebastion Zayne Menser of Providence, KY. Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of Anders-Rice Funeral Home with the Rev. Dan Lyons officiating. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 Thursday at funeral home and at other times will be at the home of his son. The family strongly request in lieu of flowers that donations be made in Herberts memory to: Habitat for Humanity, 13 Biltmore Ave., Asheville, NC 28801.
