Herbert "Mac' Mccurry Jr.

March 20, 1929 — January 12, 2002

Asheville - On Saturday January 12, 2002 Herbert Eugene Mac McCurry Jr., 72, went home to be with the Lord. H.E. McCurry, Jr. Mac was born in Asheville, NC and attended Asheville City Schools. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and North Carolina National Guard. In 1954 he began a long term career in law enforcement joining the Asheville City Police Department where he was employed until 1969, receiving several accommodations for his dedication and service. He worked for the Weaverville Police Department in 1970 then joined the Buncombe County Sheriffs Department in 1971. While working at the Sheriffs Department he performed many duties, working as a dispatcher and giving morning reports on WWNC radio. Later he held a position in the Buncombe County Jail until retiring in 1989. After retirement he continued working in private patrol until 1999. During the 60s Mac and his family owned and operated Macs Grocery on the corner of Asheland and Hilliard Ave. He was the son of the late Herbert McCurry, Sr. and the late Grace Tucker. He was also preceded in death by a son, Herbert McCurry, III, sisters, Merlin Kaake and Frances Evanscik and mother of his children, Peggy D. Barnes. Those left to cherish his memory are his daughters, Susan A. Taylor of Arden and Barbara M. Doster of Asheville; sons, David L. McCurry of Asheville, Thomas F. McCurry of Thomasville and Michael E. McCurry of Archdale; 9 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday at Green Hills Cemetery with the Rev. Patricia Bacon officiating. His family will receive friends from 7 to 9 Monday at Anders-Rice Funeral Home.
