Hazel Young

Asheville - Hazel Elizabeth Shope Young, 88, of 56 Madeline Avenue went to be with her Lord Friday, February 17, 2006 at St. Josephs Campus following a period of declining health. A native of Haywood County, Mrs. Young had resided in Buncombe County since 1944. She was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church in Asheville where she worked in the childrens ministry for 35 years, was active in WMU and a member of TOPS for over 30 years. She was a daughter of the late Garrett Hobart Shope, Sr. and Bertha Miller Shope and wife of the Robert Louis Young who died in 1981. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Mabel Hooker and brother, Clarence Pete Shope. Surviving are her sons, Jerry Young and wife, Nina of Asheville, Douglas Young of Asheville and Robert A. Young and wife, Faye of Jacksonville, FL; grandchildren, David, Jonathan, Rob, Scott & Baxter Young, Christy Ingle, Christopher Douglas Farmer; great-grandchildren, Casey & Sam Young, Lauren, Cody & Leah Ingle, Lucas & Jacob Young; sisters, Sue Belcher of Candler, Ruth Shope of Asheville; brothers, Rev. Hobart Shope, Jr., Calvin, Robert, James & David Shope all of Candler. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am Monday at Anders-Rice Funeral Home with Revs Jerry Young and Jim Whitted officiating. Burial will be in Pisgah View Memorial Park. The family will receive friends 7 to 9 pm Sunday at the funeral home and at other times the family will be at the home of son, Jerry Young, 218 East Farm Creek Drive in Asheville.
