Asheville Harry Mitchell Stevens, 97, formerly of 120 Dellwood Street, went to be with his Lord Wednesday, May 31, 2006 at Pisgah Manor Health Care Center. A lifelong resident of Buncombe County. He was formerly the oldest living member of Gashes Creek Baptist Church where he had served as Deacon, Sunday School Teacher, Church Trustee and member of the Mens Bible Class. Mr. Stevens retired as a brick and block layer mason, member of the Brick Layers Union #1, member of the Biltmore Masonic Lodge # 446 for over 50 years and served in the U.S. Army. He was the son of the late Charles Mitchell and Lula Elizabeth Freeman Stevens and was also preceded in death by his first wife, Myrtle Hill Stevens and step son, Robert Newton. Surviving are his wife, Frances Greene Stevens; daughter, Carolyn Pat Stines of Hendersonville; son, David Stevens of Asheville; 3 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday in the chapel of Anders-Rice Funeral Home with the Rev. Lester Crayton officiating. Burial will be in Pisgah View Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to Ecclesia Baptist Church Building Fund, 15 Spivey Lake Drive, Fairview, NC 28730.
