Candler – Harold Sanders Waites, 90, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, June 14, 2022. Harold was born on August 14, 1931, in Asheville to the late Lindsey Samuel Waites and Mertie Pearl McLane Waites. He is also preceded in death by his brothers: Mack (Dot) Waites, Jack (Martha) Waites, and David Waites; stepdaughter, Elaine Head; nephew, Gary Waites; and stepson-in-law, Jim Wilson. Harold graduated from Lee Edwards High School in 1950 and served his county in the U.S. Navy from 1951 – 1954 during the Korean War. Harold worked for the Asheville Fire Department for 34 ½ years until retiring as a Captain in 1994. Harold loved fishing and camping, and he spent many hours at the lake. He loved to travel, especially on cruises that were taken with his wife. He loved to gather with his family and friends, especially the gatherings at his home. He also enjoyed traveling to different venues around the country on his yearly Navy reunions. Harold is survived by his loving wife of 38 years, Nancy “Carolyn”; son, Will; step-children: Teresa Reaves, Donna Wilson, and Jim (Shari) Reaves; step-grandchildren: Josh Robinson, Alisa & Andrew Wilson, Brooke (Nicholas) Jud, and Lauren Reaves; step-great-grandchildren: Ryan & Carson Stephens; nieces: Kathy, Robbie, and Tammy (Phillip); nephews: Sam (Cymantha), and Danny (Tonya); sisters-in-law: Pat Waites, Linda (John) Councilman, and Alice (Sanford) Lewis as well as many extended family and friends. A memorial service will be held at 2 PM on Wednesday, June 22, 2022, in the chapel of Anders-Rice Funeral Home with Pastor Michael McFarland officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park with military honors provided by the U.S. Navy. The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 1 till 2 PM at the funeral home. Flowers will be accepted, or donations may be made to ABCCM or Four Seasons Hospice. The family would like to express a special thank you to Dr. Laurie LeMauviel and very special stepdaughter Donna Wilson for the loving care of our loved one during his final days, and to the staff of Anders-Rice Funeral Home for their sympathy and care for the family.
