Asheville – Glenda Lee Clark Johnson, 86, took the Lord’s hand and stepped into heaven very peacefully, quickly, and quietly on Monday, May 6, 2024.
A lifelong resident of Buncombe County, she started her teaching career at Leicester Elementary (2 years) and then taught for 30 more years at Erwin Middle School. Throughout her teaching career she served as a Coach in Volleyball and Softball, served as the Beta Club Sponsor, and drove a bus for 16 years. She loved her students and truly desired to see them be successful in life. So many lives were touched by her limitless giving. Pleasant Hill Missionary Baptist Church was her one and only home church since 1961. Going to Sunday School, being a part of the Women’s Prayer Group, Hearing God’s Word being preached every Sunday, and those Amazing Senior Trips were highlights in her life.
“Miss J.” as she was known, lived a very rewarding life. Graduating from Emma High School, she was very athletic and began to play basketball and softball whenever there was a team playing. Her softball career spanned from the 1950 – 1980s. She played on many teams including the “Asheville Ladies” of which she was very proud. Her highest honor was being the All- State Catcher one year at the NC State Tournament. Later, Mrs. Johnson loved cheering on those NC Tarheels with Dean Smith and Roy Williams.
Family was so important to her all throughout the years. She baked hams and cooked turkeys for all the family gatherings. Her favorite place on earth was Myrtle Beach, every year the family took a trip in her honor. Mrs. Johnson enjoyed seeing all the grandchildren play sports (volleyball, softball, basketball, track and cross country). The highlights of her life were her children, grandchildren, and great- grandchildren. She poured so much love into each of their lives enjoying every minute she was able to spend with them. Most of all, Mrs. Johnson was a “Giver” each and every day of her life. She gave very willingly to her family, friends, and students. Her love and legacy will live on through her family and friends. We will truly miss her, cherishing each precious memory, as we will always love her dearly.
Mrs. Johnson was a daughter of the late Garland Fore and Aretha Rosetta Clark Fore and wife of Walter Audrey Johnson, who passed away in 2022.
Surviving are her daughter, Audrey Johnson Webb and husband, Keith of Asheville; son, Andy Johnson and wife, Susan of Asheville; grandchildren: Kristen Wells (Jarrod), Hannah Franklin (Jason), Byron Webb (Devynne), and Courtney Green (Andy); great grandchildren: Adlee and Rylan Wells, Harper Franklin, Josie Green, Brooks and Collins Webb; sister, Judy Ferenchiak (Steve) of Asheville; cousin, Winona Clark of Asheville; nephews: Jimmie Worley (Tracie), Roger Worley (Nicole); along with extended family, church family, and friends.
