Gladys J. Crompton

Asheville Gladys Juanita Green Crompton, 93, formerly of 30 Tryon Street passed away Saturday, May 30, 2009 at Pisgah Manor Health Care Center. A native of Bladen County, NC she had resided in Buncombe County most of her life. She was formerly employed with Asheville City Schools where she served in the lunch room, was a former member of Haywood Street United Methodist Church where she served as a Sunday School Teacher and on the Administrative Council and was currently a member of Central United Methodist Church. She also was a charter member of American Legion Auxiliary Post #335, a member of Rebecca Lodge and was former owner & operator of Cromptons Shoe Shop. Mrs. Crompton was a daughter of the late James Robert and Ethel Dowless Green and was the wife of Spears Elmer Crompton who died in 1959. She was also preceded in death by her son, David Spears Crompton who died in 1989 and brother, J. R. Green. Surviving are her daughter, Sandra C. Rickman of Asheville; sister, Caroline Harbin of Asheville; 8 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren and 6 great-great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held 2:30 P.M. Wednesday in the chapel of Anders-Rice Funeral Home with Rev. Dr. Douglas Tilley and her grandson, Andy Rickman officiating. Burial will follow in Green Hills Cemetery with her grandsons Andy and William Rickman, Frankie, David, Danny and Dale Crompton serving as pallbearers. The family will receive friends 1:30 to 2:30 P.M. Wednesday prior to services at the funeral home. Flowers are appreciated or memorials may be made to the Alzheimers Association Western Carolina Chapter, 31 College Place, Suite D320, Asheville, N.C. 28801-2644.
