Asheville - Gladys Marie Cogdill, 83, passed away Monday, December 30, 2013 at the Stone Creek Health and Rehabilitation Center after a period of declining health. A lifelong resident of Buncombe County, Gladys was the second to youngest daughter of John Fate and Lear Elizabeth Sams Cogdill. She worked for many years at Mills Manufacturing before deciding to stay at home to take care of her ailing mother. Gladys enjoyed singing gospel and country songs, especially with her sisters and nieces. She was often entertaining to the staff and fellow residents of Stone Creek. Everyone enjoyed her sharp wit and sense of humor, and she brought laughter to those around her. She will be deeply missed by her many family members and friends. In addition to her parents, Gladys was also preceded in death by her sisters: Agnes Cogdill, Lucille MacLeod, Mazel Heiner, and Evelyn Powell; and brothers: John and Richard Cogdill. She is survived by her sister, Patsy Ford. Gladys was a loving aunt to many nieces and nephews, and she shared her home for many years with her nephew Richard David Cogdill. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM Thursday in the chapel of Anders-Rice Funeral Home, with the Rev. Daniel Dockery officiating. Burial will follow in Ashelawn Gardens of Memory. The family will receive friends from 6:30 8:00 PM Wednesday at the funeral home.
