George Thurman "Uncle Bug" Woodby Jr.

March 9, 1933 — July 21, 2003

Asheville - George Thurman Uncle Bug Woodby, Jr., 70, of 129 Little Knob Rd. and Winter Haven, FL died Monday, July 21, 2003 at the VA Medical Center, Asheville. A native of Buncombe County, he was a 15 year veteran of the US Army, serving during the Korean Conflict where he was awarded a Bronze Star with a V. He was the son of the late George Thurman and Myrtle Cordell Woodby, Sr. and he was also preceded in death by a son, George Ray Woodby. Surviving are his wife, Barbara Fryar Woodby of the home; brother, Tony Dills of Weaverville; sons, Mark Allen Woodby and Ronald William Woodby both of Fairview; daughters, Sharon L. Ross of Columbia, SC, and Sandra Kay Baker and husband Larry of Fairview; 10 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Thursday in the Anders-Rice Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Michael Woodby officiating. Burial will be in Piney Grove Presbyterian Cemetery, Swannanoa with military graveside rites conducted by the Buncombe County Veterans Council/Volunteer Memorial Team. The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 PM Wednesday at the funeral home.
