George Everette Spears Jr.

George Everette Spears Jr.


Asheville - George Jr. was born January 20, 1936, and raised in Asheville/Buncombe County and completed his journey here on earth on January 2, 2024.


He attended Grace School in North Asheville, graduated from Woodfin High School Class of 1954, and received a Bachelor of Science from Western Carolina College, Cullowhee, N.C. Class of 1959. He moved to Tidewater Virginia where he met and married Frances Patricia Fuller and started his career in education. He taught school in Norfolk, Chesapeake and Virginia Beach, Virginia. While teaching school he attended Old Dominion University, The College of William and Mary, University of Virginia and received the degree of Master of Arts in Education and Human Development from The George Washington University in Washington, D.C. class of 1982.


He was a life member of the National Education Association, Virginia Education Association, Virginia Beach Education Association and Virginia PTA. At one time he was a member of Vance Masonic Lodge, N.C. and Great Bridge Masonic Lodge, Great Bridge Royal Arch and Great Bridge Order of the Eastern Star, Va. After thirty-two years in education, he retired as Director of Guidance of Brandon Middle School and returned to his hometown of Asheville and the mountains of Western North Carolina.


He was preceded in death by his father George E. Spears, Sr; his mother Gladys Amanda Wykle, and his wife Frances Patricia Fuller; Close friends William Ammons and Walter Michaels. He is survived by his partner Orlando Durkee Conner Jr, Close friends Dennis Alexander of Asheville, and Austin Lewis of Atlanta. After the harvest of organs for transplant his body will be cremated. At a later date his ashes will be thrown to the wind somewhere in the mountains of North Carolina.
