George Carter

Asheville - Guy George Carter, Jr., 68, of 21 Carrier Street, passed away Monday, May 7, 2007 at the Memorial Campus of Mission Hospitals following a long illness. A lifelong resident of Buncombe County, he retired from Strawberry-Hill Chase Bag Co., following twenty years of service. He was a veteran of the US Navy and of the Baptist faith. Mr. Carter was the son of the late Guy George Carter, Sr. and Flora Mae Dayton Carter. He was also preceded in death by sisters: Virginia Smart, Betty Parker and Doris McDaris; and twin brothers that died at childbirth. Surviving are his wife, Mary Lou Johnston Carter, whom he married May 18, 1968; daughter, Cynthia Herron and husband Jimmy of Leicester; sons: Brian Carter and wife Cherri of Leicester, Phil Bishop and wife Sharon of Asheville, and Ronnie Bishop of Asheville; eight grandchildren: Tonya Hall, Phillip Bishop, Jr., Candace Bishop, Seth, Joshua and Caleb Carter, and Noah and Jonah Herron; one great-grandson, Conner Hall; and sisters: Jo Ann Rhea of Spartanburg, SC and Ethel Carland and husband Doug of Laurens, SC. Funeral services will be held at 11 AM Thursday in the chapel of Anders-Rice Funeral Home, with the Rev. Charles Phillips and Rev. Butch Solesbee officiating. Burial will follow in Green Hills Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 PM Wednesday at the funeral home.
