Garfield F. "Smokey" Wood Jr.

Skyland - Garfield F. Smokey Wood, Jr., 87, of 5 Atkins St. died Monday January 12, 2004 at the Mountain Area Hospice Solace Center after an extended illness. A Native and lifelong resident of Buncombe County, he retired from Greyhound Bus Lines after 35 years of service. He was a member of Skyland Baptist Church where he was a former teacher in the Gideon Sunday School Class and a WWII Veteran of the U.S. Marine Corp. He was a son of the late Garfield F. Wood, Sr. and Lillie Mae Boone Wood. and the husband of the late Helen Marie Butler Wood. Surviving are his daughter, Helen June Reagan of Arden; grandchildren, Tracy D. Reagan and Robin Devaynes both of Asheville; 2 great grandchildren and 2 step great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Thursday at Skyland Baptist Church with the Rev. Perry Brindley officiating. Burial will be in New Salem Cemetery with military graveside rites provided by the Buncombe County Veterans Council Volunteer Memorial Team. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 P.M. Wednesday at Anders-Rice Funeral Home.
