ASHEVILLE - FRED VAN PENLEY, JR. , 71, OF 10 SKYLAND CIRCLE DIED MONDAY, NOVEMBER 20, 2000 AT HIS RESIDENCE. MR. PENLEY WAS A NATIVE AND LIFE LONG RESIDENT OF BUNCOMBE COUNTY. HE WAS A MEMBER OF ELK MOUNTAIN BAPTIST CHURCH AND HE WAS A VETERAN SERVING DURING THE KOREAN WAR. HE WORKED FOR BURLINGTON INDUSTRIES FOR 38 YEARS AND HE WORKED FOR 10 YEARS FOR THE VETERANS OF FOREIGN WARS POST 891 WHERE HE SERVED AS POST COMMANDER FOR 3 YEARS. HE WAS THE SON OF THE LATE FRED VAN PENLEY, SR. AND THE LATE GRACE LEE P. PENLEY. SURVIVING ARE HIS WIFE, BETTY JANE STEWART PENLEY OF THE HOME; HIS SON, RUSSELL PENLEY AND WIFE WANDA OF WEAVERVILLE; HIS DAUGHTER, JANET POOLE AND HUSBAND JOHNNY OF ASHEVILLE; SISTERS, JACQUETTE RECTOR OF ASHEVILLE AND GENEVA CHRISTOFORA AND HUSBAND PETE OF STRATFORD, NJ; GRANDDAUGHTERS, AMANDA AND LAURA POOLE, AND MEAGAN PENLEY. FUNERAL SERVICES WILL BE HELD AT 2:00 PM WEDNESDAY IN THE ANDERS-RICE FUNERAL HOME CHAPEL WITH THE REVS. DEAN HUGGINS AND WALTER TAYLOR OFFICIATING. BURIAL WILL BE IN ELK MOUNTAIN BAPTIST CHURCH CEMETERY WITH MILIATRY GRAVESIDE RITES CONDUCTED BY THE ASHEVILLE HIGH SCHOOL MARINE CORP. JR. ROTC. THE FAMILY WILL RECEIVE FRIENDS FROM 7 UNTIL 9 PM TUESDAY AT THE FUNERAL HOME.
