Asheville Fred B. Anders, 83, of 6 Old #20, went to be with his Lord Sunday, October 23, 2005 at his residence following a period of declining health. A lifelong resident of Buncombe County, he was a member of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church. He was the son of the late James Edward and Bertie Ballard Anders. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Roy C. Anders and special parents: Tate W. and Bernice Whitaker Haynes. Fred graduated from West Buncombe High School and attended Cecils Business College before enlisting in the U.S. Army Air Corps. during World War II. Upon his fathers death in 1942, he was honorably discharged to return home and manage the familys Oak Hill Dairy in Leicester, which was deemed a more valuable service to his country. He continued to operate the dairy until 1973. He then worked for the US Postal Service, and later joined the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation of Soil, from which he retired after 30 years of service. Fred was a gifted baseball player and played industrial league ball from 1948-1956. During this time, he played with the Valley Springs Springers as a starting pitcher. For six of the nine years he played, the team finished first in the Buncombe County League. In later years, his favorite pastime was watching his grandchildren play softball and baseball. He never missed a game and was a regular at practice. Fred was a loving husband, father and grandfather, affectionately known by his grandchildren as Pop Pop. Surviving are his wife of over 51 years, Billie Lunsford Anders; children: Karen Anders, Kim Clements and husband Gib, and Keith Anders and wife Kathy, all of Asheville; and grandchildren: Alicia Arrington and husband Stephen of Waynesville, Erin Morrow of Charlotte, Tyler Clements of Asheville, and Kelly Silvers of Jupiter. Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Wednesday at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church, with the Rev. Dr. Ronnie Owen and Rev. Charles Phillips officiating. Burial will be in Green Hills Cemetery. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the Erwin High School J.R.O.T.C. Serving as pallbearers will be Lloyd Lunsford, W.J. Thompson, Stephen Arrington, Ron Morrow, Wilburn Parham, Calvin Parham, and Gary Silver. Honorary pallbearers will be the surviving members of the Valley Springs Springers Baseball team: Bill Dunn, Sanford Lewis, Norman Lewis, Don Ellingburg, Ken Ellingburg, Earl Johnson, Had Zeugner, Gilbert Lance, Bob Shroat, Chick Martin, W.J. Thompson, Jerry Cunningham, and Joe Rhodes. The family will receive friends from 12:30 - 1:45 PM Wednesday at the church. Flowers are appreciated, or memorials may be made to Mt. Carmel Baptist Church Building Fund, 200 Mt. Carmel Road, Asheville, NC 28806. The family would like to express their deepest appreciation for the love and care Fred received from the staff of Mountain Area Hospice.
