Asheville – Emily Hughes Clark, 80, passed away Saturday, May 15, 2021 at her residence. A lifelong resident of Buncombe County, Mrs. Clark was a 1959 graduate of Erwin High School, and was employed in the textile and healthcare industries during her working career, working 12 years for Charles D. Owen before going to The Oaks of Sweeten Creek. She was a member of Happy Valley Baptist Church. Mrs. Clark was the daughter of the late Andrew Cecil and Mary Martha Cannon Hughes. She was also preceded in death by her husband, William Grover “Doug” Clark, who passed away August 3, 2008; sisters: Betty H. Williams, Martha H. Smart, and Leila H. Reece; and brother, J.C. Hughes. Surviving are her sons: Douglas Clark and wife Susan, Ira Clark and wife Bridgette, Travis Clark and wife Rhonda, and Kyle Clark; daughter, Sharmon Guterwill and husband Johnny; step-children: Clifford Clark and wife Donna, and Teresa Clark Metcalf; sisters: Barbara Sams and Hollie Morris; brothers: Tommy Hughes and wife Mary, Walter Hughes, and George Hughes and wife Robin; 21 grandchildren; 4 step-grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; 10 step-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be held at 1:00 PM Sunday, May 23, 2021 at Ashelawn Gardens of Memory, with the Rev. Perry Burke officiating. The family would like to offer a heart-felt expression of Thanks to Dr. Jason Goldie and staff, Care Partners P.T. unit, and Care Partners Hospice. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the WNC Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association, 31 College Place, #103, Asheville, NC 28801, or at www.alz.org. Anders-Rice Funeral Home is assisting Mrs. Clark’s family with her arrangements.
