Elizabeth Compton Smith

May 17, 1900 — August 11, 2001

Asheville - Elizabeth Compton Smith, 101, of 500 Beaverdam Road died Saturday, August 11, 2001 at the Beverly Health Care Center following a brief illness. A native of Haywood County, she had resided in Buncombe County since 1942. Mrs. Smith was a retired nurse, having formerly been employed with Appalachian Hall Hospital until retirement and was a member of the Woodfin Church Of God. Mrs. Smith loved her family, her church and her God, and helping others. She continued private nursing until she was 82 and carried the stub from the check to prove it. She was a daughter of the late Thomas Jefferson and Annie Marie Whitner Compton and the wife of the late James Madison Matt Smith. Surviving are her daughter, Ruth Ann Baumeister Davis and husband, Raymond of Wheaton, Illinois; grandsons, Paul Baumeister and wife, Naureen and John Baumeister and wife, Mary Frances all of Chicago, Illinois; great grandson, Griffin Baumeister and great granddaughters, Audrey and Grace Baumeister all of Chicago, Illinois; sister, Pauline Hooper of West Asheville and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 10 am Tuesday in the chapel of the Anders-Rice funeral home with the Revs. Ronald Dodson and Dennis Pitts officiating. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery in Waynesville. The family will receive friends 7 to 9 pm Monday at the funeral home.
