Elizabeth Cairnes Freeman

October 18, 1918 — November 19, 2001

Fairview - Mary Elizabeth Cairnes Freeman, 83, of 3016 Cane Creek Rd. died Monday, November 19, 2001 at Fleshers Fairview Health Care Center. A native and resident of Buncombe County for most of her life, she, along with her first husband, Rudolph Burris, were former restaurant owners and operators in the Candler area. She was a former artist and painter for Shields Studios in Asheville and During WW II, Mrs. Freeman was a secretary for the Department of Defense at Langley Field in Virginia. She was a member of West Asheville Baptist Church, active in the Democratic Party and was a member of the V.F.W. Post #891. Mrs. Freeman was the daughter of the late Thomas Hooper Cairnes and Carrie Elizabeth Clayton Cairnes and the wife of the late Rudolph Hardy Burris and the late Elijah Leonard Freeman. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Alvoid J. Cairnes and a sister, Carolyn Fureigh. Surviving are her son, James L. Burris and wife Deanna of Asheville; sisters, Edith Gardin and Helen Morgan both of Asheville, Nancy White of California and Darlene Warren of Flint, Michigan; 4 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held at 11 AM Friday at Shepherd Memorial Park with the Rev. Bill Higgins officiating. Anders-Rice Funeral Home is serving the family.
