Elbert "Hoover" Brooks

March 6, 1928 — February 12, 2016

Elbert Hoover Brooks of Brevard Road, Asheville died on Friday, February 12, 2016, after a short illness. He was born in Buncombe County on March 6, 1928 and was a descendent of Sam Brooks that came to the Asheville area in 1785. He was the youngest son of the late George Dill Brooks and Nora Barber Brooks. Brothers and sisters now deceased include Roy Brooks, Sr., Clyde Doc Brooks, Harry Brooks, Leo Brooks, Dewey Brooks, Helen Brooks Drake and Inez Brooks Lollis. Hoover was predeceased by his longtime companion of 28 years, Helen Wade. He is survived by Helens children and his best friend and good buddy, Larry McMahan. Hoover will be dearly missed especially, by his many friends at The Candler Flea Market. He saw the world different than most and applied his wonderful sense of humor and plain speaking talent to everything. It will be tough to replace this one. He will be buried beside his mother Nora, at Bent Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. Anders-Rice Funeral Home of West Asheville is handling the arrangements. Donation suggestions: Four Seasons Hospice, Humane Society or the organization of your choice.
