Asheville - Edna Gay Greene Rice, 82, of 126 Goldview Road, who resided at the Brian Center in Weaverville for the past six months, died Friday, March 14, 2003 at Memorial Mission Hospital following a period of declining health. A native of Madison County and a graduate of Red Oak High School. She had resided in Buncombe County since 1946. She retired in 1982 from Kearfott where she had served for many years in the Assembly Department. Mrs. Rice was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church where she was a member of the Ladies Bible Class, sang in the church choir and was a former Sunday School Teacher. She was the daughter of the late Leburn Elon and Annie Mae Metcalf Greene and the wife of Rufus Hugh Rice, whom she was married for 63 years, who died August 14, 2002. She was also preceded in death by her son in law, Rex Rhodes, sisters, Lucille Hughey and Helen Franklin and brothers, Ellis Greene and Bon Greene. Surviving are her daughter, Brenda R. Rhodes of Asheville; son, Carroll Dean Rice and wife, Wanda of Asheville; brothers, Dellis Greene of Marshall, Don Greene of Weaverville and Bruce Greene of Asheville; grandchildren, Brent Rice and wife Lori, Tammy R. Norton, Chad Williams and wife Jamie and Angela Shelton and husband, Paul; great grandsons, Dylan Moody and Houston Norton. Funeral services will be held 3:30 pm Monday at the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. Keith Watkins, Rev. Ebb Jenkins and Chaplain Steve Greene officiating. Burial will be in Ashelawn Gardens of Memory. The family will receive friends from 2 to 3:30 pm Monday at the church and at other times the family will be at the home of Carroll and Wanda Rice, 130 Goldview Road, Asheville. The family would like to express our appreciation to the employees and nursing staff of the Brian Center in Weaveville for the loving care of our Mother.
