Dr. Horace Brown Griffin

March 21, 1924 — December 2, 2001

Candler - Horace Brown Griffin, Ph.D, 77, of 2-A Heather Way, died Sunday, December 2, 2001 at the Blue Ridge Health Care Center. A native of Henderson County, he resided in Haywood County where he taught and coached at Clyde High School and resided in Cullowhee while teaching history and serving as guidance counselor at the McKee-Camp Laboratory School of Western Carolina University. He moved to Knoxville, Tennessee where he resided from 1967-1969 while he completed his Doctor of Education degree at the University of Tennessee. From 1969-1974, he resided in Greeneville, TN where he served as principal of Greeneville High School and then moved to Buncombe County where he was assistant superintendent for the Buncombe County school system in charge of school plant planning from 1974-1980. Dr. Griffin was a member of the First Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon and former teacher of the Seekers Sunday School Class. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He was a son of the late Pinkney Eli and Clorena Jones Griffin and was also preceded in death by his former wife, Lillian Jones Griffin; sister, Helen Corn; brothers, Orville Griffin and ODell Griffin; his and Judys infant daughter, Claudia Ann Griffin. Surviving are his wife of 39 years, Judy Brown Griffin of the home; daughters, Sara G. Schlafer of Seymour, Tennessee, Elaine G. Stokes and husband, Dwight E. Stokes of Kodak, Tennessee; grandchildren, Megan S. Rowe of Knoxville, Dustin and Drew Stokes of Kodak; great grandchildren, Lilian, Gabe and Kaeli all of Knoxville; sisters, Viola Holbert and Roberta Justus of Hendersonville; brother, Woodrow P. Woody Griffin of Cincinnati, Ohio and formerly of Asheville. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at the First Baptist Church of Asheville with Dr. Guy Sayles, Rev. Robbin Mundy, and Rev. Dr. J. Michael Leatherwood officiating. The committal will be in Shepherd Memorial Park, Henderson County with the Rev. Harold McKinnish officiating. The family will receive friends 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Anders-Rice Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 5 Oak St., Asheville, NC 28801. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, and grandfather and a man devoted to Christ and the church and to the education and development of young people.
