Dorothy Leola "Dot" Cannon

May 23, 1941 — March 11, 2024

Vienna, VA – Dorothy Leola “Dot” Cannon, 82, went to be with the Lord on Monday, March 11, 2024, at her sister’s home in Candler, NC while surrounded by family.

A native of Asheville, she was a daughter of the late Charlie Homer Cannon and June Burgess Cannon. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Betty Joan Cannon; and brothers: Harold Cannon, and Johnny Cannon.

Dorothy accepted a job with the US government very shortly after graduating high school in 1959. In the course of her 40-year career with the United States Government she worked for several agencies at several stations including in Frankfurt, Germany, and Rome, Italy. In addition to her work she traveled extensively which was her passion. She visited places as far away as China and as close as her own home state. In a degree unrelated to her actual work she took night courses over a period of 17 years and obtained a Master's Degree in American History.

She was the big sister to most of us and she was the greatest Aunt to so many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. Her caring and sharing nature will be sorely missed.

Surviving are her siblings: William H. Cannon of Candler, Nancy Penley of Leicester, Robert Cannon of Candler, Sara Penley and husband Ernie of Leicester, Michael Cannon of Asheville, Sam Cannon and wife Deborah of Asheville, and Carolyn Ray and husband Bruce of Candler; and by many beloved nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, extended family, and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 1 PM on Saturday, March 16, 2024, at Aaron Baptist Church. Pastor Jonathan Stewart will officiate. Burial will follow at Green Hills Cemetery.

The family will receive friends on Saturday from 12 till 1 PM at the church.

Flowers are appreciated or donations may be made in her memory to Aaron Baptist Church, Missions Fund, 266 View Street, Asheville, NC 28806.
