Asheville - Dorothy Dottie Eugenia Chandler Ballinger, 89, of 138 Morningside Drive passed away Tuesday, January 18, 2011 at her home. A lifelong resident of Buncombe County, she taught at Weaverville High School and The Orthopedic School, retiring in 1981. She was also a receptionist for her brother, the late Weldon Chandler, M.D. Mrs. Ballinger was a member of West Asheville Baptist Church and a charter member of Grace Baptist Church. She graduated from Lee H. Edwards High School (1938), Mars Hill Jr. College, and UNC-Greensboro. A daughter of the late Chester Virgil Chandler and Bessie Lee Buckner Chandler, she was also preceded in death by her grandson, Nathaniel Jensen. Surviving are her husband of 62 years, Popejoy Ballinger; daughters Beverly Webb (Dale) of Lawrenceville, GA, Rachel Jensen (Bruce) and Martha Farmer (Frank) of Asheville; grandchildren Joshua, Caleb, Micah and Elisha Webb, Maryanna and Christina Jensen, Rachel Graves, Rebekah Wilson, Luke Wilson and Laura Farmer; 6 great grandchildren; sister Margaret Robinson (Travis) of Mars Hill; 4 nieces and 5 nephews. Funeral services will be held 3 P.M. Friday at West Asheville Baptist Church with Rev. Dr. Stan Welch officiating. Burial will follow in Locust Grove Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Dr. John T. Tiller officiating. The family will receive friends 6:30 to 8:30 P.M. Thursday at Anders-Rice Funeral Home.
