Don "Papaw" Best

Asheville - Donald Eugene Papaw Best, 70, of 148 Porter Road died Tuesday August 5, 2003 at Memorial Mission Hospital after a brief illness. A native and lifelong resident of Buncombe County, he was a Member of Merrimon Avenue Baptist Church and a former Sunday School Teacher. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and a son of the late Eugene Charles and Beulah Geneva Lyda Best. Surviving are his wife, Ivanell Moss Best of the home; daughters, Rebecca Best Orr of Asheville and Jane Elizabeth Best of the home; sister, Barbara Ann Connor of Sylva; brothers, Jerry Best of Asheville and Kenneth Best of Swannanoa; granddaughter, Melissa Jenell Orr; grandson, Brandon Richard Orr; former son-in-law and still friend, Darrell Richard Orr; special nephews, Ryan Lane Moss and Evan Scott Moss; a great number of brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews whom he loved much and special companion and friend Runner. Graveside services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Friday at Ashelawn Gardens of Memory with the Rev. Billy Cline officiating and military graveside rites provided by the Buncombe County Veterans Council Volunteer Memorial Team. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 P.M. Thursday at Anders-Rice Funeral Home. A special thank you from the family to the doctors and nursing staff of the Med-Surg ICU at Memorial Mission Hospital for their excellent care and compassion.
