Dewey Wilson "Bill" Putnam

Asheville - Dewey Wilson Bill Putnam, 91, of Asheville, passed away Sunday, May 25, 2008 at Pisgah Manor Health Care Center. Born in Peckham, CO and raised in Haywood County, he was the son of the late Robert Coleman and Margaret Roxie Stamey Putnam. He was the sixth of eight children, all of whom are deceased. He served in the US Navy, Seaman Second Class, during World War II. Mr. Putnam later joined the National Guard, serving as Sergeant, Battery B, 112th Field Artillery Battalion. He retired from American Enka, and was a member of Grace Baptist Church, and had previously served as a deacon and Sunday School Superintendent at other churches in the past. Surviving are his wife of 72 years, Bertha Lee Flynn Putnam, of the home; daughter, Bobbie Geraldine Putnam Hawkins and husband James A Hawkins, Sr. of Dalton, GA; grandchildren: J. A. Hawkins, Jr. and wife Cheri Beale Hawkins of Dublin, GA and Kimberly Dawn Hawkins Wilson and husband T. R. Wilson of Ocilla, GA; great-grandchildren: Erin Nicole Hawkins Franks and husband Justin Franks of Jesup, GA, and J. A. Trey Hawkins, III, Tommy J. Wilson and Brandi Leigh Wilson, all of Ocilla, GA; and great, great-grandchildren, Tommy and Maxim. Funeral services will be held at 11AM Wednesday in the chapel of Anders-Rice Funeral Home, with the Rev. Dr. Wayne Adkisson officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Park in Forest City, NC. The family will receive friends from 6-7:30 PM Tuesday at the funeral home.
