Asheville - Dewey Edward Calloway, 79, of 28 Birchwood Lane died unexpectedly Sunday December 7, 2008. A native and resident of Buncombe County for most of his life, he retired from the U.S. Army in 1971 as a Sgt. Major after 24 years of service. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War. He was the owner and operator of Biltmore Shoe Repair since 1971. He was a son of the late Oscar Laund and Vista Follett Calloway and the husband of the late Lucia Margaret Giebisch Calloway. He was also preceded in death by brothers Carl and Claude Calloway. Surviving are his sons, Billy W. Calloway and wife Lois of Flagstaff, AZ and James D. Calloway and wife Teri of Asheville; daughter, Lucy Stella and husband Ben of Asheville; sisters, Pauline Edney of Greenville, SC, Elizabeth McLaughlin of Middletown, OH, Irene Taylor and Judy Cauble both of Asheville; brother, Johnny Calloway of Franklin, OH; 8 grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Friday at Anders-Rice Funeral Home. Military graveside rites will be conducted by a detachment from Ft. Bragg in Pisgah View Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:00 P.M. Thursday at the funeral home.
