Denver Sluder

June 23, 1921 — October 7, 2002

Asheville - Denver Sluder, 81, crossed over Monday, October 7, 2002 at the Elizabeth House in Henderson County following a period of declining health. A lifelong resident of Buncombe County. He was a 1941 graduate of West Buncombe High School, was a W W Ii US Navy veteran and one who lived his life to the fullest measure. Mr. Sluder retired in 1984 from Norfolk-Southern Railway where he had served as a switchman. He was a member of Victory Baptist Church where is also was a member of the Sunshine Club. He was a son of the late Dennis Rankin Doc Sluder and Macie Haney Sluder and was also preceded in death by his loving wife, Dorothy Chambers Sluder and brother, D.R. Sluder, Jr. Mr. Sluder is survived by his daughter, Dianne of Asheville; brothers, Gay Sluder and wife, Betty of Asheville and James Sluder and wife, Eurtha of Enka; sisters, Marie Sluder Stanfield of Asheville, Betty Sluder Waters and husband, Jim of Lenoir and Phyllis Sluder Black and husband, Harry of Forest City; sister in law, Shirley Bailey Sluder of Asheville; several nieces and nephews and his Beautiful Angel, Mae Carter of Asheville. His extended family includes, Roberta Towe, Peggy Johnson (widow of Clarence Johnson), Myron and Renee Johnson Layton and son, Cody, Greg and Lori N. Johnson and sons, Bradley and James, Wade and Kimberly Johnson Reed and daughters, Teffany, Brooke, Kristen and Madison; Todd and Revonda Johnson and children, Jennifer and Drew. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at Victory Baptist Church with the Revs Larry Sprinkle and Dr. Jim Waters officiating. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Greg, Todd, Bradley and James Johnson, Cody Layton, Junior Ducker and Charles Fore. Honorary Pallbearers will be members of Victory Baptist Church Sunshine Club. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at Anders-Rice Funeral Home.
