Charles J. "Bill" Messer

December 15, 1924 — August 28, 2002

Asheville - Charles Junior Bill Messer, 77, of 95 Wolfe Park Circle died Wednesday, August 28, 2002 at Memorial Mission Hospital following a period of declining health. A native of Haywood County. He had resided in Buncombe County since 1926. Mr. Messer retired as former owner of Charlie Mobile Home Service, was a member of Woodland Terrace Baptist Church and served in the U.S. Army as an engineer in Europe during W.W. I I. He was a son of the late William Charles and Maggie Belle Stamey Messer and the husband of Annis Esther Bobbie Messer who died June 30, 1996. He was also preceded in death by grandson, Dewey Richard Sluder, great grandson, Anthony Peel and son-in-law, Thomas Ford. Surviving are his daughters, Patricia Ann Duarte and husband, Joe of Asheville and Florence Marie Ford of Mars Hill; granddaughters, Stephanie Duarte and Annis Hardwick both of Asheville and Melissa Peel of Mars Hill; grandsons, Charles Sluder of Fletcher and Jeff Ford of Candler; ten great grandchildren; brothers, Clyde Messer and Carroll Messer both of Candler. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday in the chapel of Anders-Rice Funeral Home with the Rev. Vince Keith and Rev. Dr. Tom Sawyer officiating. Pallbearers will be Dale Fisher, Walt McPeak, Jeff Peel, Freddy Cedillo, Jeff Otwell and Danny Overman. Burial will be in Pisgah View Memorial Park with military rites conducted by the Buncombe County Veterans Council Memorial Team. The family will receive friends 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home and at other times the family will be at the home of his daughter, Pat Duarte, 93 Wolfe Park Circle, Asheville.
