Cary, NC - Carl Vance Rodgers, 94, died Saturday, May 3, 2008 in Cary, NC, with his granddaughter at his bedside. Mr. Rodgers was born in Buncombe County where he lived the majority of his life. He graduated from Leicester High School and began work at American Enka. He served his country in the US Army during World War II. There he served as an MP guarding German General Erwin Rommels defeated troops. He was discharged with the rank of Staff Sergeant. After World War II, he worked for the US Postal Service, initially as a railroad mail clerk, then with the Asheville Post Office when rail service ended. He retired after 34 years of service. Mr. Rodgers was the son of the late Sidney Vance and Lula Gallienne Rodgers of Buncombe County. He was a loving family man that outlived two wives: Ruth Ingle Rodgers who died in 1974, and Frances Winkler Rodgers who died in 1991. He was also preceded in death by his brothers: Sidney 0Vance Rodgers, Jr. of Buncombe County, Lewis Jack Rodgers of Lothian, MD, and Raymond J. Rodgers of Maryland. Surviving are his son, Larry Vance Rodgers of Asheville; grandson, Charles Rodgers of Charlotte; granddaughter, Carolyn Vance Rodgers of Cary, NC; great-grandchildren: Charlie and Alex Rodgers of Charlotte, and Julia and Nathaniel Waldrup Rodgers of Cary; and brother, Paul Rodgers of Hagerstown, MD. Mr. Rodgers will be cremated and his ashes interred in Dix Creek Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery at 3 PM on Saturday, May 17, 2008, with the Rev. Jerry Wilson officiating. Military honors will be conducted by the NC National Guard Honor Guard. Anders-Rice Funeral Home is assisting the Rodgers family.
