Billy Hawkins

Candler – Billy Edward Hawkins, age 90, passed away Friday, February 19, 2021 at the NC State Veterans Home in Black Mountain. He was born March 4, 1930 to Julia and Clinton Hawkins of Alexander. He is survived by his sister, Alma Mehaffey of Greer, SC and a number of nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Howard C. Hawkins, Sr. (2020), Uyless, John, Ellis and Donald Hawkins and sisters, Georgia Green, Gaynelle Baldwin and Hazel Hawkins. Billy served in the US Navy during the Korean War aboard the USS Maddox and other ships. After returning home, he worked for Frederickson Truck Lines, Youngblood Trucking Co., Carolina Freight Lines and was awarded the Good Driver Award. Billy was interested in car races at Daytona Beach and other race tracks. In 1995, he won first place in a car show in Asheville for his 1963 Chevy Nova. He always enjoyed the friendships he made at the car shows. Billy was a Christian and attended Mountain View Church as long as his health allowed it. He had been at the NC State Veterans Home for the past 5 years due to dementia and alzheimer’s. Billy enjoyed the Christian fellowship and services at the home held by Chaplain Jack L. Taylor. Billy’s nephew, Howard C. “Howie” Hawkins, Jr. was involved in Billy’s life for many years and was a great comfort to him in his last years. Howie would like to thank all the employees of the Veterans Home for all the care, love and concern they gave his uncle during his stay. Due to Covid 19 virus and restrictions, a memorial service will be held at a later date.
