Bill Wood

Weaverville William Russell Bill Wood, 77, of 14 Claircastle Drive, passed away Wednesday, February 27, 2019 at the Emerald Ridge Rehab and Care Center. A native of Trenton, NJ, he had resided in Buncombe County since the mid 90s. He retired September 9, 1992 from the California Highway Patrol where he served as a trooper for a number of years and while in Asheville, he served for 15 years with the Federal Court System as a Security Officer. He was a veteran of the US Air Force. Mr. Wood was a son of the late William Cherry Wood and Sarah Elizabeth Wilson Talmadge. Surviving are his wife, Martha Sue Buckner Wood, whom he married June 12, 2004; sons, Brian Wood and wife Kathy and Paul Wood all of California; granddaughters, Emily, Addison and Dayven Wood; several step children and step grandchildren, including his special step grandson, Alex Hurlbut; sister, Nancy Rutledge and husband Jim of Kannapolis; brother, Robert Bob Wood and wife Nancy of Virginia and several nieces and nephews. Memorial services will be held at 2 PM on Friday, March 8, 2019 in the chapel of the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery with Pastor Andrew Crimmins officiating. Military rites will be conducted by the Detachment of Shaw Air Force Base.
