Betty Sue Mason Gardner, 91, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, December 20, 2023, at the River Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center, formerly the Western NC Baptist Home.
Betty Gardner was born on May 5, 1932 in Asheville, NC to a great Christian home. She always had good influences from her mother and dad, Rev. and Mrs. JP Mason, now in heaven. They taught her to be kind, think of others, and to love Jesus and put Him first in her life.
Betty was a member of West Asheville Baptist Church for more than 50 years where she helped in the Primary Care Department, Day Care, and sang in the choir for several years. She worked as a secretary for many years. Later, Betty was desirous of getting into other work since she was growing older, so she demonstrated foods in grocery stores and at Sam’s Club in Asheville. Most recently she volunteered for the Charles George VA Medical Center where she greeted veterans and encouraged them with loving fellowship.
She was a National Honor Society member and an Honor Club member at Mars Hill College. She enjoyed nature and loved music, especially singing God’s praise. She was a people person and enjoyed doing things for others, such as, sending cards, and calling to encourage sick folks she knew. She loved the Lord with all her heart and found it a privilege to serve Him.
Betty and her first husband, Bill Hutchison had two children, Bill R. Hutchison, and Bonnie Jeanne Hutchison who both live out of state. Following her first marriage, she later remarried Jack Davis Gardner from West Asheville.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her first husband, Bill Hutchison; second husband, Jack Davis Gardner; four sisters, and a brother.
Those left to cherish her memory are her children: Bill R. Hutchison, Jr. and wife Teresa, and Bonnie Jeanne Hutchison Orozco and husband Peter; 10 beloved grandchildren, and 14 beloved great-grandchildren.
A private graveside service will be held at the Gillespie-Evergreen Cemetery in Brevard.
A service of remembrance will be held at a later date at West Asheville Baptist Church.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made in her memory to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or online at stjude.org
