Asheville - Barbara Collier Spain, 66, of 76 Raleigh Rd. died Saturday, August 16, 2003 at the Mountain Area Hospice Solace Center after a courageous battle with cancer. A native of Hogansville, GA. Mrs. Spain had resided in Asheville since 1974. She was a daughter of the late Louie Andrew and Mildred Lancaster Collier and was also preceded in death by her step-mother, Mary Elizabeth Collier with whom she was raised and a brother, Bryan Collier. Mrs. Spain was a retired waitress and a member of Biltmore Holliness Temple. Surviving is her husband, John Thomas Spain of the home; daughter, Joy Balding Newman and husband, Steve of Orlando, FL; grandchildren, A. Clark Evans, student at Florida State University and April C. Evans of Orlando, FL ; sisters, June Upton and husband, Leroy of Waverly Hall, GA, Glenda Strausser and husband, Don of Jacksonville, FL, Dorothy Moss and husband, Tom of Midland, GA; brothers, Richard Collier and wife, Carolyn of Upatoi, GA, Ronald Collier and wife, Mary of Atlanta, GA, Larry Collier and wife, Carolyn of Columbus, GA, Gary Collier and wife, Jean of Florida; several nieces and nephews. Private graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Woodlawn Cemetery with the Rev. Ron Chandley officiating. Anders-Rice Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
