Alma Silver Metcalf

Alma Gray Silver Metcalf, 91, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, January 14, 2023, at Fleshers Fairview Health Care Center.

A native and lifelong resident of Buncombe County, she was a daughter of the late Offie Howard Silver and Teakie Maude Capps Silver and was the wife of Charles Cleveland Metcalf who died July 3, 2013. She was also preceded in death by her sisters: Helen Hembree and Doris Culbertson; and brothers: Harold Silver, Offie “Junior” Silver and J.D. Silver.

Alma was a member Bethel Baptist Church before joining Bent Creek Baptist Church. She worked at the American Enka Plant for many years before she retired from the Burlington Yarn Plant. As a young mother she made our clothes while she worked full time. Upon retirement, Alma began a journey of learning new things. She took up crocheting as a hobby, went to Bob Ross Painting Classes and took up painting for a while, and got a video camera and would video tape the grandkids and whatever else she thought was interesting. She learned how to use the computer and began a journey of researching genealogy of both sides of the family. She put together two books on the Metcalf and Silver families.

Surviving are her children: Sharon Doty and husband Paul of Asheville, Randall Charles Metcalf and wife Robbie, and Lisa Towe and husband Rick all of Candler; grandchildren: David Doty, Katie Doty, Kelly Doty, Landon Metcalf, Justin Metcalf, Alyssa Metcalf, Blake Metcalf and wife Lauren, and Tiffany Towe Proffitt and husband Matt; great-grandchildren: Gavin Reed Metcalf, Charlie Kate Metcalf, Hattie Glynn Metcalf, and Wren Julia Metcalf; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 12 PM on Saturday, January 21, 2023, in the chapel of Anders-Rice Funeral Home, with Rev. Mark Lewis officiating. A private burial will follow at Pisgah View Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends for 1 hour prior to services on Saturday at the funeral home.
