Woody Henson

March 1, 1917 — January 13, 2016

Asheville Allen Woodrow Woody Henson, 98, of 600 Barrett Lane, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, January 13, 2016 at the Givens Estate. He was a lifelong resident of Buncombe County and a graduate of Lee Edwards High School. He retired from the Asheville VA Medical Center where he had served as a Lab Technician and was a member of the Asheville First Church of the Nazarene. He was a WWII veteran, having served eight years in the US Navy and along with his brother, served on the USS Arizona Battleship prior to the beginning of WWII of which many of his shipmates were lost in the attack at Pearl Harbor. He was a son of the late John Harrison Henson and Esther Edna Roberts Henson and husband of Dora Price Henson who died October 5, 2003. He was also preceded in death by a brother, William Edward Henson and sister, Jean Owenbey. Surviving are two sisters, Marjorie Ann Vaquer and Alice Henson Piercy and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Graveside services will be held at 10:30 AM Saturday, January 16, 2016 at Green Hills Cemetery with military honors conducted by the US Navy. Memorials services will be held at 2 PM Saturday, January 16, 2016 at the Wesley Room of the Givens Health Care Center, 600 Barrett Lane, on Givens Campus, 2360 Sweeten Creek Road, Asheville, NC 28803 with Pastor Andrew Crimmins and Rev. Ed Hillman officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: Asheville First Church of the Nazarene, 385 Hazel Mill Road, Asheville, NC 28806.
