Arden Walter Glenn Tipton, 88, of 390 Sycamore Drive, passed away Thursday, February 27, 2014 at his home. A native of St. Petersburg, FL, he had resided in Buncombe County since 1969. He retired in 1969 from the St. Petersburg Police Dept following 20 years of service as Assistant Chief of Police and Captain of Detectives. Mr. Tipton was a graduate of the following: FBI Academy, having served as past President of the Florida Chapter of the FBI, Keeler Polygraph Institute in Chicago, IL, Southern Police Institute in Louisville, KY and Northwestern Traffic Institute in Evanston, IL. Mr. Tipton was a member of Biltmore Masonic Lodge #446 for the past 31 years, with a total of 63 years as a Mason, a former member of Asheville West Rotary Club, a member of Arden Presbyterian Church where he served as Deacon and Elder and was a U.S. Marine Corp veteran of WWII, having served from 1943 to 1946 in Guam, China and at the Battle of Okinawa. Mr. Tipton was the son of the late Claude Harris Tipton and Wilma Johnson Tipton. He was also preceded in death by his granddaughter, Elizabeth Jeanne Stetson. Surviving are his wife whom he married February 16, 1947, Elizabeth Marie Betty Bertossa Tipton of the home; son, David Glenn Tipton and wife Diann of Taylors, SC; daughter, Kathleen Marie Tipton Stetson and husband Robert M. of Wolf Laurel; grandchildren, Robert M. Stetson, Jr., Anne Marie Schruckmayr, David Michael Tipton and Devin Glenn Tipton; great grandchildren, Zoe Elizabeth Schruckmayr, Robert Cole Stetson and Michael Schruckmayr and sister, Jeanne M. Tipton of St. Petersburg, FL. Graveside services will be held at 2 PM Tuesday, March 4, 2014 at Shepherd Memorial Park with the Biltmore Masonic Lodge #446 officiating. The Lodge will open at 12:30 PM. Military honors will be conducted by the US Marine Corps.
