Asheville - Walter Murdock Chockley, Jr., 92, of the Oaks of Sweeten Creek, formerly of 22 Covington St., died Tuesday, March 30, 2004 at the Oaks of Sweeten Creek. A native of Buncombe County, he was A U.S. Army veteran of WW II and was a retired painting contractor. He was a member of the Christian Missionary Alliance Church. Mr. Chockley was the son of the late Walter Maloney Chockley and Jennie Tarr Chockley and was the husband of the late Sylvia Mae Reese Chockley who died April 18, 2002. Surviving are his son, Bill Chockley and wife Nancy of Asheville; daughters, Linda Simpson and husband Frank of Mills River and Debra Chockley Rice of Marshall; sister, Jeanette Bowling and husband Harold of Swannanoa; grandchildren, Nicole and Morgan Chockley, Jeff, Josh and wife Laura, and Jennifer Simpson. Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Thursday in the Anders-Rice Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev.Dr. Ronnie Owen and Mr. Bill Lee officiating. Burial will be in Pisgah View Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 until 8:30 PM Wednesday at the funeral home.
