Candler - Walter Henry Hipps, Jr. 73 of 66 Morgan Cove Road went home to be with his Lord, Friday, November 21, 2003. A native and lifelong resident of Buncombe County, he was a member of Maple Ridge Baptist Church where he was a former Sunday School teacher and choir member. He was a 32nd Degree Mason and a member of Hominy Lodge. He was a graduate of Blantons Business College and a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corp. He served in law enforcement in Buncombe County for several years and retired from the Enforcement Division of the N.C. Department of Motor Vehicles as a supervisor in the Western District. After retirement, he drove a school bus for Buncombe County for 9 years. He was a son of the late Walter and Ada Grogan Hipps and was also preceded in death by a sister, Violet Hipps Scott. Surviving are his wife of 37 years, Barbara Payne Hipps of the home; son, Walter Kent Hipps and wife Debra of Asheville, grandson, Walter Kenny Hipps and wife Stephanie of Athens, GA.; granddaughter, Alyce Hipps; brother, James Hipps and wife Mary Lou, Billy Hipps and wife, Bobbie; sisters, Louise Quakenbush and husband bill, Betty Sue Hensley and husband L.J., Joyce Smith and husband Bill all of Asheville and Nancy Creasman and husband Don of Gilbert, SC. He is also survived by his extended family; Special Mom Lucille Payne, brothers in law, Dale Payne and Ralph Payne and wife Irene, sisters in law, Carolyn Payne and Cleata Wilson and husband Denny along with numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 12 Noon Monday at Anders-Rice Funeral home with the Revs. Larry Sprouse and Jackie Collins officiating. Burial will be in Pisgah View Memorial Park with Masonic Graveside rites provided by the Hominy Lodge. Pallbearers will be nephews, Jim Payne, Eric Payne, Bill Jones, Dean Quakenbush, Richard Smith, Larry Smith, Woody Scott and Tony Hensley. Honorary pallbearers will be Bill Costello and Perry Kuykendall. The family will receive friends from 4 to 6:00 P.M. Sunday at the funeral home.
