Walter Davis

January 3, 1934 — March 17, 2014

Alexander Walter Davis, 80, of 218 Old Hwy #20, went to be with the Lord on Monday, March 17, 2014 at the John F. Keever, Jr. Solace Center. A native of Madison County, he had resided in Buncombe County most of his life. He was a graduate of Leicester High School and was a Korean War veteran, having served in the US Navy. Mr. Davis received his B.S. Degree in Business Administration and B.A. Degree in Social Science with Certification in Education from Western Carolina University. Following graduation, he taught High School History in Clayton, GA prior to becoming a Vocational Rehabilitational Counselor for 26 years for the state of North Carolina until his retirement in 1989. He was a 40 year member with the Erwin Hills Lions Club and a member of Redmon Baptist Church. Mr. Davis was the son of the late William Memphis Bill Davis and Beatrice Rice Davis and was also preceded in death by his brother, Hassel Davis. Surviving are his wife Della Faye Waycaster Davis of the home; daughter, Pamela Davis Turbyfill (Chris) of Leicester; step daughter, Joy Dalton (Johnny) and step son, Darryl Dodd (Darlene) all of Asheville; grandchildren, Mason Turbyfill and Bryce Turbyfill; step grandchildren, Tonia Holderman (Phil), Kristy Dodd, John Dalton (Angie), Kelly Kimbley (Ryan) and Adam Turbyfill; step great-grandchildren, Brooke Holderman, Emily Holderman, Alex Ginn, Colton Dalton and Noah Dalton; sister, Orlene Carroll of Apex; several nieces and nephews, including his special niece, Vickie Ellenburg. Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Thursday, March 20, 2014 in the chapel of Anders-Rice Funeral Home with Rev. Dr. Ronnie Owen officiating. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the NC National Guard at Forest Lawn Memorial Park with members of the Erwin Hills Lions Club and his Breakfast Buddies serving as pallbearers. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 PM Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to: Erwin Hills Lions Club, 188 Erwin Hills Road, Asheville, NC 28806.
