Walter "Buck" Hughes

June 6, 1939 — November 10, 2021

Asheville – Walter Theodore Hughes, 82, of Asheville, died Wednesday, November 10, 2021 at his residence. A lifelong resident of Buncombe County, he was a self employed farmer and a member of Happy Valley Baptist Church. He was the son of the late Andrew Cecil Hughes and Mary Cannon Hughes. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Cora Mae Hughes; 4 sisters; a brother; a son, Sherrill Hughes; and a grandson, Marty Lee Parrott II. He was a wonderful Dad and Papaw, he enjoyed farming and seeing his grandchildren grow up. He was deeply loved by all who knew him and he will be greatly missed. His family was his pride and joy. He is survived by his sons: Randall and wife Karen, Mark and wife Michell, and David Hughes all of Asheville; daughter, April Wheeler of Old Fort; Brothers: Tommy and wife Mary, and George Hughes; sisters: Barbara Sams, and Hollie Morris; sixteen grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 PM on Saturday, November 13, 2021, in the chapel of Anders-Rice Funeral Home, with Tim Warren officiating. A private burial will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends on Saturday from 1 till 2 PM at the funeral home.
