Vernie "Granny" King

November 13, 1923 — July 9, 2017

Asheville Vernie Reemes Granny King went home to be with her Lord Sunday, July 9, 2017 following 93 years of wonderful life. A native of Madison County, Mrs. King had resided in Buncombe County for most of her life. She had worked most of the dairy farms in and around the Sandy Mush area, and had retired as a seamstress from Hadleys Manufacturing Company. She was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church. Granny will be very much missed, but very much remembered in our hearts and minds. She was a wonderful woman with a heart of gold. A mother, a doctor, and councilor, a friend: she was everything a woman, mother and Granny could be. Each and every one of us was very blessed to have her in our lives. She will also be remembered for her famous biscuits and gravy when you were in her home or on the porch. You were always treated like family. She was a loving, caring, pet-loving, family-loving, gardening, hard-working mind-speaking type of woman. She will be loved and missed by all. Mrs. King was the daughter of the late Tony and Lettie Marlor Reemes, and was the wife of the late Marcus Oliver Pap King. She was also preceded in death by a son, Max Eugene King; sons-in-law: Tony Williams and Jimmy E. Surrett; granddaughter, Tonya Michelle Ballard; brothers: Bud, Lester, Beed, Dimp and Willard; and sisters: Ad and Poss. Surviving are her children: Rex Willard King, Susie King Webb, Phillip Ray King, Pat Williams, Betty Cook, Sheila Duong, Richard Stanley and Lester Stanley; Maxs kids: Missy, Tater, Kim, Mark, and Kelly; Missys children: Holly and Ashley; Taters sons: Jonathan and Jeffrey; Jonathans kids: Cadin and Calob; Jeffreys daughter, Chloe; Kims kids: Chase and Hallie; Marks kids: Trenton and Telia; Kellys son, Kevin; Rexs son, Tony; Tonys kids: Luke and Brandy; Phillips kids: Lucy, Sharon, Jimmy, Josh, Sammy, and Sierra; Lucys kids: Bryan and Brittany; Brittanys sons: Evan and Alex; Sharons kids: Mark and Amanda; Marks daughter, Ryleigh; Jimmys son, Jordan; Jordans daughter, Pasley; Joshs son, Ryan; Sierras son, Isaha; Sammys daughters: Chloe and Chelsy; Susies kids: Mike, Teresa and Natasha; Mikes kids: Calob and Cassy; Teresas kids: Jonathan, Michelle and Brandy; Michelles kids: Candis and Alexis; Pats daughter, Angie; Angies kids, Tyler and Ryley; Bettys kids: Mark and Marty; Martys kids: Janie, Austin and Jarred; Janies son, Javin; Sheilas kids: Justin and Katie; Katies son, Joseph; Justins kids: Mylo, Mevea, Diamond, Jenevea, Desman, and Keauna. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM Wednesday at Piney Grove Baptist Church, with the Rev. Charles Phillips officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2:00 3:00 PM Wednesday at the church. To all who knew Vernie King, with grateful hearts, we wish to express our thanks to the many friends and relatives who stopped by and sat on the porch with our dear Momma. The kindness of the Luther family as well as Bethesda Church will never be forgotten. Mom was the wind beneath our wings, the calm in our storm, the vessel that caught our tears, and the bed that always had room. If there is any good in any of us, it is because of our mother. Anders-Rice Funeral Home is assisting Mrs. Kings family.
